Here’s a handy guide to our gigs this spring. Come to one of these and wear some sparkly clothes and we’ll get you drunk.
We are Artrocker’s Single of the Week, both this week and last. Thanks, Artrocker, that’s awesome. We share this honour with some really good bands too, so Radials are very pleased.
Production line, Radials style:
We’ve been putting together the EP package that you can get from all our gigs and at our online shop, which is coming soon. It comes with a double sided poster (lyrics on the other side), and a hand painted disc. The paint doesn’t affect playback – we tested them. Each one is a tiny bit different, and some are messier than others.
While I was painting the cds, I listened on repeat to Use It Up and Wear It Out by Odyssey. Incidentally, this phrase can now also be applied to my tube of cerulean blue paint.
Odyssey are awesome.

Oh, and our next gig is THIS WEDNESDAY at 93 Feet East, Brick Lane. We’re on at 8:30.

A Spanish bloke called Alfonso came up to me after our gig clutching a piece of paper. Turns out he’s a sometime artist and drew a picture of us as we played our set. RESULT! I wish we could have a picture drawn of us at every gig. We could make it into a video! It has actually given me an inspiration to draw something from every gig we play. Tourazine? Is that a kind of jewel?
Thanks, Alfonso. And also thanks to all of those who came to see us last night, it was a great gig and lovely crowd. The headliners, Concrete Knives, brought a dash of natty Gallic charm to the proceedings, they were great.
Til next time!

The above reference is to the T-Rex song, Get It On. They are more or less my favourite band. Them and Wire.
Aside from this, yesterday I took delivery of the greatest drums in the world (probably). My new stand-up, cocktail, silver glitter Mapex Saturns.
This is not a normal drum kit because it doesn’t have a bass drum, instead it has a large floor tom with a modified bass pedal. The other, smaller drums on lock onto the main frame or the cymbal stand. I play it standing up. It’s pretty, isn’t it?
No, in fact it’s BEAUTIFUL.
I actually used the drums to record the EP but they weren’t in this configuration, because the factory sent the wrong parts and the whole thing looked a bit like Frankenstein’s monster. That’s why I’ve saved putting up a photo of them til now.
This are the first kit I’ve put proper thought into designing for myself (having previously always played a fairly generic Pearl Export kit) and it took a loong time for them to be made and shipped over. I kind of consider them an extra member of the band. Huge thanks must go to the London Drum Company (namely Simon, who is awesome) for putting them together and doing all the drilling and whatnot. I’m not very good with a drill, or any mechanical tools.
Their first outing will be in 2 days time at the Old Blue Last – AH MAN!

Since Radials is very much about drawing as well as playing instruments, I am going to write from time to time of the artists whose work, I believe, makes life considerably better.
Edward Bawden is one of my all time faves. Look at this beautiful print he made of London. I came across it today when I was supposed to be at work, working. I can’t tell exactly where it’s set, if one specific place – surely around Clerkenwell / Smithfield.
Who’d think to use purple like that? Nice one Edward.

… The Old Blue Last has been a public house since before the Great Fire of London – you remember the one – back in the 60s it was. Back when Shoreditch was just a ditch, and Spitalfields was actually some hospital fields.
I live quite nearby so I like finding out these things.
At the Old Blue Last, where once you could get a pint of mead and a bawd and maybe a fight with a minstrel, now you can get some of the best handpicked new music live every night of the week!
On the 24th January, we will be joining the roster. We’re playing a free gig and we’re on at 8pm. So really, there’s no reason not to come, if you live in London. No reason at all.
There’ll be some really exciting things going on at this gig. Firstly, we’ll be unveiling our finished, printed artwork. More details on that to come.
And also, it’ll be the first time my new drum kit will be making an appearance. I’ve been waiting for these drums to be delivered for a long long time, and now they’re finally here. You’ll hear about them again, no doubt. Suffice it to say for now that they excellent, unusual, beautiful, and covered in silver glitter.
Come down and see us on the 24th – and if not, we hope to see you soon anyway.
